The workshops are an important component of the clinic; after all the Boston Sea Rovers are dedicated to increasing awareness and appreciation of the marine environment. The workshops provide a unique opportunity for direct interaction with teachers eager to share their expertise.

DAN – Conservative Diving

DAN – Emergency Oxygen for Scuba Diving Injuries

Taught by local DAN Instructors, the DAN Emergency Oxygen for Scuba Diving Injuries course will be offered to Boston Sea Rovers show attendees. The course is designed to train and educate interested individuals in the techniques of using oxygen as first aid for a suspected dive injury. In addition, this course will introduce the fundamentals of recognizing diving injury warning signs, response and management. This program also provides an excellent opportunity for experienced divers and instructors to continue their education.

The time needed to teach the course varies depending on several factors including the number of students and their ability to process the educational components of the program.

Knowledge Development:
Topics covered in Emergency Oxygen for Scuba Injuries are:
• atmospheric gases
• respiration and circulation
• decompression illness
• oxygen and diving injuries
• handling oxygen safely
• oxygen delivery systems and components

Course participants must complete the DAN Emergency Oxygen for Scuba Diving Injuries examination with a minimum passing score of 80 percent. The instructor will review the examination with each participant to ensure 100 percent understanding of the material.

This course requires current certification in DAN Basic Life Support: CPR and First Aid or other full CPR course.

Skill Development:
At the end of this program, you will be able to:
• Assess the scene and oxygen provider safety.
• Identify the main components of the DAN oxygen unit.
• Assemble and deploy a DAN oxygen unit.
• Select and prepare the appropriate oxygen mask.
• Operate an oxygen unit and using these oxygen-delivery devices:
• demand inhalator valve and mask
• constant-flow, nonrebreather mask
• manually triggered ventilator and/or bag valve mask
Recertification is required every 24 months.

Introduction to Freediving

In this two-part seminar, Nick Fazah, Co – Owner and instructor with East Coast Divers in Brookline, MA, will take you through an academic and in-water introduction to freediving. In the classroom, you will learn about the mammalian diving reflex and the anatomy of a blackout. During the pool session, you will learn proper buddy safety and practice techniques that are proven to extend your personal breath hold ability. Novices will be challenged to double their personal bests for breath hold time. For the pool session you will need your mask, snorkel and preferably a 3 mm wetsuit (full or jacket will suffice).

NOTE: This is not a full Freediving program and does not result in any certification. The safety covered is minimal and specific to this introduction. If you plan on freediving, it is advised that you complete a full certification course.

2 Sessions of 10 Maximum each

This workshop will introduce you to the safest and most effective moving water search procedures proven to work by PSD and military teams searching for guns, bodies, and larger objects around the world.

PSI-PCI Visual Cylinder Inspection, Hazmat Training and Fill Station Operator

Visual Cylinder Inspector Course – This certification course teaches the basics of conducting visual inspections of solid wall and composite SCUBA and SCBA cylinders.  The 6 – 8 hour course is suited for those new to visual inspection well as those who have been inspecting without formal training through its wide range of inspection subjects including damage limits, neck cracking, and laws affecting inspectors.  Additionally, this course meets the OSHA and DOT requirements for employee HAZMAT training and attendants completing the course are qualified to conduct HAZMAT training for cylinder handlers .  Previously certified inspectors may attend this full course under the VCIR for re-qualification.  The course is open to anyone 16 years or older and no previous cylinder inspection experience is required.  Participants receive certification as Visual Cylinder Inspectors upon course completion.

PSI-PCI Eddy Current Technician

Eddy current testing is designed to detect cracks in the neck area of aluminum cylinders.  However, improper use of the testing devices is resulting in many false readings.  This workshop provides manufacture-approved training in operation of the Visual Plus, Visual Plus 3 & Visual Eddy instruments.  Students must be trained and current PSI-PCI Visual Cylinder Inspectors.  It is recommended that attendees bring their own eddy current  instruments so they may train on their own instruments.

PSI-PCI Oxygen Cylinder Cleaning Technician

EVERY nitrox cylinder needs to be cleaned for oxygen service.  This is not a difficult procedure, although it does require diligent application of prescribed procedures and close attention to safety precautions.  This course is in compliance with cleaning requirements of the Compressed Gas Association, U.S. government agencies & manufacturers’ policies.  Students must be trained and current PSI-PCI Visual Cylinder Inspectors.

Rebreather Demo

This event is being offered to certified recreational scuba divers wanting the opportunity to experience rebreather diving in a controlled environment with an experienced rebreather instructor. Whether wanting to try a rebreather for the first time or for already certified rebreather divers wanting to demo a specific manufactures rebreather unit.

The program will include an intro lecture of manual and fully electronic rebreather designs, how to choose a rebreather to meet your diving needs, common myths and conceptions, and basic skill overview. Followed by a pool demonstration where participants will be able to try different rebreathers under the guidance and supervision of a rebreather instructor.

Speakers & Instructors:

Steve Lewis – Silent Diving / Rebreather Instructor

Steve Lewis has been an active technical diver, instructor and expedition leader since the early 1990s when diving was an antidote to a career in marketing and brand management. In 2002 he retired from the corporate world and became a dive bum full-time, and is currently a training, and product consultant for a major rebreather manufacturer and design consultant for a leading open-circuit dive equipment company. As a speaker, educator, and blogger, he is best known for promoting safe diving practices to technical divers using both open and closed-circuit kit, in caves, on wrecks and in open water environments.

Matt Marcoux – Revo Representative / Rebreather Instructor

Matt Marcoux co-captains the vessel Daybreaker where he started crewing for his father in 1997.  Matt became openwater certified in 1994 and became a NAUI instructor in 2004. Currently Matt is a TDI and IANTD rEvo CCR, advanced nitrox and decompression instructor. Matt also holds certifications of advanced trimix CCR and full cave CCR.

Matt has dived both coasts of the United States, many Florida caves, much of the Caribbean, and Australia but still loves diving in  New England the best. Matt enjoys diving new sites whether it’s a wreck or cave or anything.

Pete Nawrocky – Dive Rite Manufacturing / Rebreather Instructor

Pete Nawrocky began his diving career in 1971 in Long Island, NY. As a marine biology major in college, Pete became fascinated by the ocean and wanted to see for himself what he was studying. Since his High School days, Pete has spent his carreer diving, exploring and photographing a multitude  of environments
Pete joined Dive Rite in 1998 and is best known for his willingness to share his passion for diving with others.
An avid underwater photographer, Pete’s photos have graced the pages of many scuba magazines over the years and can often be found in Dive Rite’s own advertisements. Always the educator, Pete often uses his photography in his lecture presentations, which has taken him from Anchorage Alaska , Bonaire  the World Trade center as well as Industry Trade shows, local aquariums, high schools, etc.A Recipient of the Beneath the Sea Diver of the Year, Naui contribution to sport diving award and SSI Platinum Pro.

Jeff Godfrey – Hollis Rebreather Instructor

In 1979, Jeff took his first scuba class as a senior in high school and during college began a career as a scientific diver and diving educator.  His work has enabled him to dive in remote locations around the world and to utilize the latest diving technology.  He has worked on research projects with several universities, NOAA and the National Geographic/Waitt Program, requiring advanced scientific diving methods, including the use deep mixed gas rebreathers.  He has co-authored several publications and frequently lectures on scientific diving.  Jeff is currently the Diving Safety Officer at the University of Connecticut and a TDI Rebreather Instructor.

Part I: Teach a more effective and profitable Rescue Diver class (4 hours).

Real-life Rescue Diving and how to make ‘Rescue Diver’ more dynamic, effective, and profitable. For Instructors, DM’s, AI’s and anyone interested in improving rescue skills. Keep students returning every three years to re-take the class. Learn what Rescue Diver equipment students should purchase, and what continuing Ed classes they’ll want to take afterwards.

 

Part II: The Art of being a Divemaster (4 hours).

Divemasters are increasingly important with the continuing reductions in diver education. Divemasters are faced with divers who are overweighted, poor swimmers, unable to breath with a flooded mask…. If you train divemasters, are, or hope to become a divemaster, this workshop is for you. Effective divemasters can make the difference between a fantastic dive and another diver drop out, and can help change the destiny of sport diving.
